LET'S MOVE ON TO ANOTHER BOOK
Okay, I struggled through Anthony's pick, Naked Lunch, and I want to thank Anthony for providing such a challenging book. I mean it. I loved trying to figure out why this drugged up talented writer's book is lauded as such an important novel, and of course, just trying to make sense of the author's/junkie's incoherent, albeit eloquent, and often obscene, ramblings is a frustrating experience. I find it difficult to classify as a literary classic though. I recognize that it was part of an important movement, but that doesn't make it an excellent piece of literature. It would be a great book to analyze in an academic setting with a good professor leading the discussion. I enjoyed Burroughs' essays at the back of the book about his writings that comprise this book, written after he got off drugs, as they provide a sample of his talent as a writer in a coherent form. And, his views on drugs and the drug culture in America are worth noting. So, THANK YOU ANTHONY! I think it was an excellent pick, except not Grandma-friendly, but no family book pick yet has been a hit with everyone. If we pick only Grandma-friendly books, we may get very bored. This book is definitely not boring.
